Evaluation

When moving on to this section of our Gothic Horror brief I was very excited at the prospect of creating our own characters. I loved watching some of my favourite shows to inspire me, while also getting to learn about new series, some of which I had never heard of. As well as this initial research I got to delve in deeper with the origins of the Gothic with the show Penny Dreadful, which is true to the first Gothic horror characters. I also feel this unit let us use our imaginations more and really gave us room to stretch our ideas and skills. The only real difficulty I had was trying to keep the character true to their character description provided for us. However in the end this helped me with sticking to a brief and thinking of ways to resolve any problems I was facing. With the character Quentin I got to explore more into prosthetics, something I have never been extremely confident in, therefore my skills have now grown and I feel more confident in that area. 
Over all I was really happy with this section of the course, if I was to do it again I would make sure I had enough practise to have more confidence in myself when creating these looks. This has also inspired me to make more of an effort with the costume in my images as I feel it really adds to a look and over all makes it more aesthetically pleasing. 

Final look Quentin

My look for Quentin was my favourite of the two as I think all my planning came together. I have involved a few close ups, mid shots and side profiles. 

When I first started Quentin I had a few problems with making the wax stick to the face, this lead to the wound having to be cut down a little so it is shorter than I first designed. However in the end I feel this actually looked better against his otherwise handsome complexion. If I was to do this again I would have a few more practises of the wound as I feel my model was sat for too long while I tried to complete it. I was happy with my choice of model as I feel his face shape and pose was perfect for my character. The outfit was one of my favourite parts of the shoot, I think he looked like a high end Victorian man and looked altogether very smart and respectable. 

Final look Claudia

For my shoot I wanted Claudia to have the simple make up, hair and costume I had originally designed.

However to link to my back story for the character and her introduction to the show, I wanted my model to look "possessed". Therefore I got my Model to role back her eyes, as in many possession films this is one of the things that start to change in the character. 

Although the look was very simple, I feel like it was really successful in being the character that I had imagined. I was happy that my model was willing to act for the photos and I felt it really helped the images come to life. The last image was to show a juxtaposition of the characters personality, through my side profile image. If I was to do the photos again I would make sure my character was facing more to the side during her side profile photos. This was the only successful one that was slightly to the side as my others weren't in focus, which I didn't notice until I was home. Other than that I was pleased with my overall look.

Step by Step
1. Make sure the models skin is clean by using cleanser and toner. Finish with some moisturiser.
2. Taking some of the  nose and scar wax (however much you need, in my case the size length of my little finger), roll this into a sausage shape. This will warm it up making it easier to mild onto the face. 
3. Place spirit gum on the area of the face you are placing the wax, in my case about the eyebrow, and on the wax and stick together until in place.
4. working quickly use a spatula to mould the wax onto the face more naturally, thinning the sides and cutting down the height if it looks un naturally tall. 
5. Once the basic shape is created, use a cotton bud and some moisturiser to smooth the edges out into the skin so the edges disappear. This will be quite a long process but will make sure the wax looks part of the face, not like an object stuck on.
6. Using the non sharp end of needle, and making sure not to lift the wax, make a slit through the middle creating an "open wound".
7. To set apply liquid latex with a cotton bud. To make sure this is clear before moving onto the next step you can use a hairdryer on cool in backwards and forwards motions. 
8. Using Kryolan brush 9930 and the illamsqua matt primer, create an even base on the face. 
9. with a mixture of olive from the ultra foundation palette and 070 from the supra colour palette apply to the face with the Upsicy flat foundation brush. Work into the hairline, onto the ears and down the neck. When putting foundation onto the "wound" use the Uspicy paddle brush for closer work so you don't damage the wax.
10. Using the paddle brush and a mixture of D1 and D3 from the derma colour palette, conceal any imperfections as well as under the eye and around the nose. 
11. Set the foundation/concealer with the translucent powder and a powder puff.
12. Using Mac 109 and colour bronzing sun from the Glam Glow palette, contour the face on the cheekbones, temples and jawline. 
13. Using blush peach from the Glam Glow palette and Kryolan 9725 lightly brush the apples of the cheeks giving them a natural tint.
14. Using Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream and your finger lightly press on the highlights of the cheeks giving a healthy glow. 
15. With a disposable mascara wand and the cream brown from the Elf Duo brow palette brush through the hairs on the brows and lashes. 
16. Using the Real techniques small rounded brush and the colours red and purple from the bruise palette, start adding colour to the inside of the wound. using the purple for depth.
17. Also use this brush to add a small amount of fake blood. 
18. make a small not in the end of the thread, then cut 1 cm pieces until you have enough for stitches on the wound. 
19. Using tweezers and duo, stick these pieces in different directions to create a stitch look. If you aren't sure what this looks like get an example of real stitches.

 Make sure the piece with a knot at the end as if it has been finished sewing in that area. 

I was happy with my first practise of stitches, although this has made me realise that I need to have a sufficient amount of time as it takes a while for the wax to blend. I also know I can't work with the wax for too long otherwise it starts to fall off the skin, other than that I was happy with this aspect. 

For the Hair

1. Make sure the hair hasn't got any product in it, so it is natural before styling.

2. Using a comb brush the hair going across the forehead, making sure the scar is seen through the fringe.

3. To hold in place, hairspray the hair.
