There were three main make up artists on the set of Penny Dreadful including Vincenzo Mastrantonio also known as Enzo, Nick Dudman head prosthetic artist and Sarita Allison. They all work together to create the fantastic make up looks we see in the show.
Vincenzo Mastrantonio
Beginning as an apprentice, Enzo was influenced to become a make up artist from his father, also a make up artist. He got to be on set as a child and got to see work such as Christopher Tucker on The Elephant Man. He used to practise with his best friend trying to recreate scars and other effects. He became a professional by 1990. Other films he's worked on include Safe House, Avengers 2, Romeo and Juliet and Titanic. He soon progressed from a artist to the key makeup designer or head artist.
While working on Penny Dreadful Enzo collaborated with all the different departments, such as the costume, hair and directors to form a concept for each character's look and feel. Once this is decided the products are then chosen and the tests begin before the final process. Things such as the period in which the show is being filmed, what they are doing, who the characters are and finally the actors themselves are considered when creating the characters. He uses his love of history and art to inspire him for these types of projects as well as working off others ideas.
When creating characters the artist also has to consider that the cameras are in high definition so sometimes less makeup but cleverly applied make up is better. One of the most complicated characters to create was the Somnolent Women as they have to consider the actors costume and the fact they are wearing contact lenses. He used products such as Le Maquillage Professional White base, Laura Mercier shadows and La Prairie finishing powder.
Nick Dudman
Nick is a world renowned makeup effects artist known for works such as Batman, Interview with a Vampire and the ten years he spent on Harry Potter. He has won a BAFTA for his work on Fifth Element and an Oscar for his work On Harry Potter Deathly Hallows part 2.
On the set of Penny Dreadful Nick had a team of talented makeup artists backing him and he even collaborated with Enzo on characters such as Ethan when he became a werewolf and on Sembene's scars. To create the perfect look it took a lot of test runs of products and gave the artists time to get used to working on that particular actors face. Nick said that the makeup was there to enhance the characters performance rather than over powering it, the looks were there to be as realistic as possible.
Eva Green who plays Vanessa Ives had her own make up artist Morna Ferguson, once the general idea for Eva was discussed Morna took care of her. However for some of the scenes Eva required some effects. The prosthetics team created a bold cap that had tufts of hair, and blood soaked cuts, it had a really great effect on the screen.
Sarita Allison
Sarita was in the fashion industry for five years after studying Art and Design at St Martin's College. She even modelled for a bit but she soon started to teach herself the art of Makeup. She began by reading Vincent Kehoe's classic makeup artist books and went on to do a short course at Greasepaint Makeup School to learn prosthetics. To work with the best she would ring them up and keep letting them know she was interested in working with them. This worked with none other than Nick. She new the guys in Nicks workshop on first name terms over a 6 month period of ringing, trying to get through to the man himself. Finally she heard back from him and got to work beside him where he realised her talent. Sarita is very unique as she works in a male dominated world.
Working alongside Nick on the set of Penny Dreadful, she helped create many of the looks. This included the 6 hours it took to create the Vampire makeup as there was the make up, False teeth, Contact lenses and nails to create. She was also a part of creating the mortuary scene in which over 100 body casts a week and 400 litres of fake blood were used in one day.

Penny Dreadful
http://www.sky.com/tv/show/penny-dreadful |
I chose Penny Dreadful as my TV show as I didn't want to go along the lines of Vampires or Zombies like a lot of the other shows. This saga is filled with dark mystery and suspense and lives within a half world between reality and the supernatural. With this show it not only takes away from this sort of "popular" supernatural, but also brings the old favourites from the Gothic back into play. Characters such as Victor Frankenstein and his monster,
Dorian Gray,
Mina Harker and
Abraham Van Helsing are featured with a modern
interpretation. Such as Frankenstein’s monster who isn't just seen as a mindless monster, he has deep feelings that we get to see throughout the show. The show also includes their own original characters such
as Ethan Chandler a werewolf and Vanessa Ives who has something inside her that she has to fight to be in control, it shows there is
something within us all. There is a Broad range of characters to take
inspiration from when creating my own characters.
It is still quite a new show, that premiered in 2014, the second season is due for release on the 3rd May 2015. In a way I felt this was better as it would be easier to introduce new characters to the show as they will ease into the storyline. This is far from a family series, and is definitely aimed at a more mature audience. However horror is popular with teenagers up to the older generation who saw the birth of the horror genre. Therefore this show will be popular with a wider audience. Woman would be drawn to this as
Vanessa Ives is a strong and independent character. Although she has a demon
within, everyday she fights to keep it inside while also trying to save other
characters. She is a clear example of a final girl who can injure anything. I
like this show as it not only looks at real monsters, but the monsters within
each person making it much more relatable while still having that fear factor.
I also like how all the monsters of the gothic are represented as it has
something for everyone. It looks into the characters past so we can truly
connect to the character and understand them a bit more. Even though already
famous gothic characters are in the show we see a different side to them,
sometimes in a more vulnerable light.

Claudia and Quentin-Introduction to the Brief
Claudia, Quentin and Mrs Laderman are new characters that are going to be introduced to one out of 12 TV series. We can choose which show and which two characters we want to design as well as how they are going to be introduced to the show. I was really excited about being in control over what TV series we enjoy and starting to design each character to fit the show. The only part I am a little wary of is the characters already having character descriptions as I feel that some of the descriptions don't fit the shows theme as well as others. However I think I need to choose a TV series before I worry about the rest of the brief. I researched into each show a little more before making my final decision.
The Walking Dead
An American drama series that began in 2010 which was developed by Frank Darabont. The idea of the show and the characters are inspired by comic books written by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard. It all begins with a Sheriff, Rick, played by Andrew Lincoln, who awakens from a coma to find himself in the middle of an apocalypse where the "walkers" (zombies) dominate the world. The story follows him as he encounters survivors on the journey to find his family. This series is an old favourite of mine, I love how if you are someone who hasn't read the comics, you can't estimate who is going to survive and who is going to die. Yet even if you have read the comics it would be amazing to see the stories come to life. Also it isn't always set in the now, you start to learn more about the past of each character and really start to bond with who they are. Even though this is one of my favourite shows, and I love the prosthetics with in the show, it isn't really one of my strongest abilities in make up so I wanted something that a gave me more options.

American Horror Story
Created and produced by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk this American horror is one of the more interesting in that each series is it's own miniseries with a beginning, middle and end. With each series there are some core characters such as Jessica Lange and Evan Peters. The first season, Murder House, centres around a family that moves into a haunted house in LA where the past dead occupants still live. The second series, my favourite, is Asylum that follows the story of the mentally insane. The Coven, follows a group of witches that live in New Orleans. Freak show is set in 1952 and tells the story of one of the last remaining American Freak Shows. Finally the fifth series Hotel, that has none other than Lady Gaga acting is due for release in October. Another amazing show with talented actors and gripping story lines. There is also a lot of amazing ideas that come to mind while thinking of this show, however I feel this would be a popular one to pick with the rest of the class and I wanted to push myself and pick a less obvious show.

Dexter
Based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter (2004) by Jeff Lindsay. The story of Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter pattern analyst for Miami Metro Police Department. However he has a dark secret with an interesting twist, he hunts down murderers who haven't been caught by the justice system and kills them himself. An eye for an eye. I haven't watched this series myself but have heard from many how good it is. It is something I'm intrigued to watch as the storyline is so interesting and I think it would be fun to see a show where the "villain" is actually hero of the story as well. With this being said because of how little I know of the story and the fact that I don't believe the character descriptions for the new characters fits this show very well.

True Blood
Created and Produced by Alan Ball this American TV drama is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries novels by Charlaine Harris. Set in a fictional small town in Northwestern Louisiana where there is a co existence between humans and vampires. Although like many stories its not that simple, with many of the humans and vampires still believing that they are more superior than the other. In comes Sookie Stackhouse who is a telepathic waitress played by Anna Paquin who seems to attract danger. Something I love about this show is that it represents so many different fantasy characters from fairies, to werewolves to vampires. It also covers a lot of topics such as religion, homophobia, love and loss. This show was one of my old favourites and I love all the characters. My issue with this one is that there were so many different characters represented already I couldn't think of many ideas for new characters.

Bates Motel
A prequel to Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Pyscho, this contemporary drama thriller follows the lives of Norman Bates and his mother Norma and their attempt to start a new life after Norma's husband death. They purchase a motel in a fictional town White Pine Bay, Oregon. This is another series that I've heard great reviews about but never watched myself. In particular I like how it is linked to a already famous horror film, as at least with this you know what happens after the show is finished. I also love the fact that although this is a prequel to the 1960's film so should be set in the 1950's, it is set in contemporary times just with a few influences of the 1950's. I do love the sounds of this series however I don't get any initial thoughts about character designs.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
A classic show that was one of my favourites during my younger days, even if it scared me a little bit. Created in 1997 these series follows the story of Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) who is a Vampire Slayer. These slayers are chosen by "fate" to battle against not only vampires but demons and other forces of darkness. The story also involves her loyal circle of friends and a Watcher who teaches, trains and guides Buffy. Once again I loved this show however I had no original inspirations when thinking about this show.

Vampire Diaries
Based on L. J. Smith's popular book series this supernatural drama was created by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec. set in Mystic Falls, Virginia a small fictional town that is haunted by supernatural beings. This story follows Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) who falls for Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) who is a vampire. As the story unfolds a love triangle starts to evolve between them and Stefan's brother Damon Salvatore. Later in the series characters such as the Original Vampires and Elena's doppelgänger Katerina Petrova get introduced and cause trouble for the town. This is another one of my favourite shows, not just because of the amazing storyline but also because of the gorgeous actors! With this being said I wasn't interested in doing this show because I feel it isn't actually "horror" enough.

In The Flesh
A British series on BBC three that has its own take on a zombie apocalypse. Rather than Zombies taking over the world, this take on apocalypse shows the zombies being re introduced to civilisation. They have to be reanimated with makeup to make them look "undead". Other than seeing the adverts I haven't actually heard much of this show, although I find their interpretation of an apocalypse very interesting and original. I think this is a very "British" look at an apocalypse, taking control of a bad situation and turning it around. I like the concept and I actually really like what you could do to a new character, but its not a show I was that into.

Being Human
Another British supernatural television series on BBC 3 this one written by Toby Whithouse. This show mixes horror and comedy as we see three flatmates, a ghost, a werewolf and a vampire try and live a "normal" life. Two of the original cast from the pilot episode were replaced by Aidan Turner and Lenora Crichlow to join Russell Tovey. Further along in the series Sinead Keenan and Michael Socha also became main cast members as werewolves. Damien Molony joined as a vampire and Kate Bracken as a ghost. I love this show and all the actors in it and especially how it takes a comedic look at the supernatural. With this being said I didn't think studying this show would be a push for my makeup skills unless doing a werewolf, which would take a lot of prosthetics. As I'm still not overly confident with extreme prosthetics this was another no.

Hemlock Groves
A Netflix original series, this horror follows the strange happenings in Hemlock Grove a fictional town in Pennsylvania. Peter Rumancek is a newcomer who arrives just as brutal murders start to occur. Many stay away from him as rumours of who he is begin to stir, however Roman Godfrey the heir to the towns wealthy Godfrey family befriends him and they work together to find out the dark secrets hiding in the town. This was one of the series that I started to watch when we first got the brief, as I wanted to know more about it. I was really drawn into the show and all the secrets that were yet to be revealed, and this was the first show that I questioned how I could bring in Mrs Laderman. However near the end of the first series I wasn't as gripped, and I couldn't think of a look that wouldn't involve having to use heavy prosthetics.

Hannibal
Shown on NBC this American psychological thriller is based on characters and elements from the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. Characters Will Graham, a FBI special investigator and Dr Hannibal Lecter, a forensic psychiatrist go from friends to become great enemies. A show that I'm very interested in watching but have never seen before. With this being said I don't know enough about the show to think of new characters for it.

Penny Dreadful
A show created for Showtime and Sky by John Logan, this is a British-American horror TV series. referring to the Penny dreadfuls, which are cheap fictional publications from the 19th century. The show includes many Gothic horror favourites, including Mina Harker and Abraham Van Helsing from Bram Stoker's Dracula, Victor Frankenstein and his monster from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Dorian Gray from Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. This is what particularly drew me to this show as I loved how they mixed classic tales with their own characters. I hadn't heard of the show before this list, but started watching it soon after and discovered how hooked I could get. This was definitely a show I was interested in looking further into and is my chosen show for the brief. I feel the characters would fit into the show and I already had ideas from the first episode.

Fashion inspired by Horror
Many of the make up looks in fashion are now inspired by a number of things, one of those being Horror. One of my favourites is designer John Galliano S/S show in 2010 where make up artist Pat Mcgrath created these beautiful "hollywood sweetheart" looks. The theme "Yesterday Once More" brings the idea of the black and white Hollywood into the lights. The dramatic feature in this look was the gold highlighted inner corners of the eyes and the black beauty spot against the pale base. The colours smudge over the thin brows as if the eyes are "dirty".
To create the thin brow just above my natural brow I used number 17 high drama intense liquid liner. I also used this to create a beauty spot under one eye where the highlighter would be.
Finally using colours LC009 and LC010 I created the cupids bow shape on the top lip, leaving the outer corners white, I followed this colour down to the middle part of the bottom lip. I used my Kryolan 9806 brush to do this, to make the outer parts whiter I used brush 9362 and 070 from the supra colour palette. To make the colour more purple I added some of the eyeshadow Shallot.
I was happy with my overall look as I loved the bright colours against the white. If I was to do it again I would make the placement of the brows more equal, and also the colour to blend further out. However I was happy at how smooth the base was and also how the lips turned out. I would also maybe make the gold more bold.

I recreated one of my favourite looks from the show, as I love the deep purples and how they compliment the bright and bold orange. I love how even though it is quite a messy look it still catches my attention of being quite beautiful. To Begin I cleansed and toned the face to give a clean base for my foundation. I then used my Illamasqua primer to make a smooth base with my Kryolan 9930 brush.
For the foundation I used a mix of 070 supra colour and Fs38 from the ultra foundation palette and the brushes Kryolan 9930 and Uspicy flat brush to create a white base. To set the foundation I used a Illamasqua loose powder and a powder puff. To contour the cheekbones I used my pointed Uspicy brush and colour 101 from the blusher palette.
Using colour Shallot from the Viva Brilliant colour medley matt palette and brushes Kryolan 9712, 3710 and real techniques deluxe crease brush I added colour to the inner brow bone, the lid and round to the lower lash line. Using Kryolan 9720 to blend when needed. Using a flat rounded crown brush and Mac 217 to blend I added Turmeric to the outer brow bone and just under the colour Shallot on the lower lash line. To highlight the inner corner of the eye I used Half Baked from my Naked 2 palette and my small real techniques rounded brush to apply it.

Evaluation
During the study of Great Expectations, and from that the Victorians I have learnt so much about how different people lived in that age, and how important your appearance was in showing your status. It was especially interesting to delve deeper into each character and start to create my own interpretation on "who" they were. I feel with this brief I found it a lot easier to go off by myself and think of my own things to research.
I made a plan of what research I needed and started to create an order to it that would lead me to my final designs. Not only did I get to research into the novel as a whole, I also got to delve into The gothic as a whole. The Architecture in particular is my favourite part of the Gothic, especially as I got to see such Gothic buildings in Paris. While building up my technical file I learnt along the way different materials I could use to create my characters such as Miss Havisham. I found that although I enjoyed doing prosthetics work it isn't my strongest point, and feel I was stronger with my theatrical ageing.

With the knowledge of my strengths I could now start creating my final looks. Keeping in mind that the characters must be historically accurate, true to the novel and must be possible to create continuity.
Overall I feel that my research really helped with creating my final characters and that my designs are appropriate for HD broadcasting.
Estella Assessment
During our assessment we were not only being assessed on our design and skills but also on our etiquette while creating these looks. We had to make sure we took note of our consultation notes of the model, our face charts, hair charts and any other pictures we referred to had to be put up on the mirrors. I also had my hair and make up kit set out ready and the bags put out of the way so my work area was clear. Finally I placed my wrap over my models shoulders and I was ready to begin.
To begin the make up I cleansed, toned and moisturised the models skin. I used my Illamasqua primer as a base. Using a mix of the ultra foundation palette and colour FS 38 and 070 from the supra colour palette I created a pale foundation base for the skin, making sure to take this down the neck and onto the shoulders, as well as onto the ears and blending into the hairline. Using my Mac 109 and the colour 101 from the blusher palette I contoured the temples, cheekbones, jawline and nose. Using my Illamasqua Brow cake in Gaze and my Kryolan 9806 I lightly filled in the brows. I then cleaned my Kryolan 9806 and used a mixture of LC007, LC005 and LC004 from the lip rouge mini palette to fill the lips. Finally using the Ben Nye palette I created the bruises on the eye, neck and shoulder, adding 8 hour cream I made the bruise look swollen. I then used a palette knife and red and purple from the Ben Nye Palette to create the "scratches". I then used Illamasqua translucent powder on the areas of the skin that only have foundation to set the look.
I was really happy with how the the make up went for this look, I think it was a good way to show the character in a different light. This was definitely my favourite look to create so far in the gothic horror blog.
To create the hair I first brushed through the whole thing to get rid of any tangles. I then sectioned off the front of the hair just behind the ears and clipped in place. With the remaining hair I put into a high ponytail. Taking 2 inch pieces of hair I then hair sprayed each section and then curled the hair. Taking one of the front sections and half it. Taking the bottom half, brush from the root and curl the very ends. Using a grip pin the curl next to the ponytail, making sure the straight part is slick to the head. With the top half curl the ends again, hoop the hair round and pin above the ponytail with the decorative clips. Finally hairspray the look to keep and stray hairs down.
My model has a lot of thick, long hair and we had a time limit so it was hard to recreate the look exactly the same as they would do in the mid-late victorian era. I new it would take too long to curl the whole hair if it was down so I put it up first. When I added the curls from the side I think it gave the hair a new dimension and I like how it turned out in the end.
I was happy with my over all look and think that it was a good representation of Estella during her marriage.
Estella Practise
After I had got together the photos of the bruises I wanted to use in my own look, I wanted to practise them and see how they came out on camera. I used my Ben Nye bruise palette and the colours purple, blue, red and yellow to re create the look. To make the scratches I used a palette knife and first used the colour red, and then purple to add depth.
I was actually very happy with how the look turned out, especially the shoulder and neck. When I create the bruise on the eye I may use a little less yellow in one area. I also may try and make the cuts on the lip and brow thin out at the end to look more natural.
Estella Hair charts
Keeping in mind my models hair I created three different hair designs that were possibilities for my version of Estella. I created the first design keeping in mind a late victorian hairstyle, as this would be the most historically correct. However with my model having such long and thick hair I wasn't sure if this look would take too long in my time limit.
For my second look I took into consideration my models hair. The style involved leaving two inch sections at the front of the hair, parted in the middle. With the rest of the hair put into a high pony and curling the ends. I would then halve one of the sides and with the hair closest to the pony I would sleek back across the hair, place over the hairband with bobby pins and curl the ends. With the front piece I would loop round and up to the top of the ponytail, curling the ends. I think I would get decorative clips to place those pieces of hair.
My final design incorporated aspects from both of my previous designs. Once again because my models hair will be long and thick, I've chosen to put it up into a high/mid pony, with all of the ends curled about one inch thick. The front is parted in the middle with the a curl either side to frame the face, and a sleek loop to fall back over the hairband. I liked this design but I feel my second was more historically correct out of the two.
Estella Face Charts
After I've researched Estella I created face charts so I could compare and decide on my final look.
My first design was quite simple, I wanted to keep her lips and cheek as the main feature of the look. This is historically accurate but I wanted to test myself a little more so I tried another design.
I much prefer my second design as the bruises give me the opportunity to try something new and more risky. I also like the fact that it is very different from the Estella that is usually portrayed. I wanted to show her in a different light, not strong and confident, but vulnerable, and still with a hint of beauty.
My final design was to show a fresher bruise on Estella's eye, with blood vessels very obvious as it would of been such a severe attack. I do like this design but I feel that my second design will push me to test my abilities a little more.
