Jane Wyatt 1934
Starring alongside actors such as Florence Reed and Henry Hull in this Hollywood adaption of Great Expectations. The characters story lines are a little different, with Miss Havisham not being the one who engineered the misfortunes between Pip and Estella. I feel that Margaret Donovan's hair design made the character look like she was from the 1920's rather than the Victorian Era. Although the hair is up in a bun the curls would usually fall around the face.

Valerie Hobson and Jean Simmons 1946
A British take on the Novel that won two Academy Awards. Working alongside actors such as Martita Hunt and John Mills. This was one of Valerie Hobson's most memorable roles in the 1940's. Jean Simmons also played young Estella before her move to Hollywood. Make up artists George Blackler and Ernest Gasser capture the times with both actresses. Jean Simmons hair fits the early Victorian style with its middle parting, although the hair would usually frame the face. They have however done this with Valerie Hobson so she fits into the Victorian style.

Sarah Miles 1974
Released in the Uk but originally created in the US, this adaption was directed by Joseph Hardy. I feel the hair is historically accurate in this re make, her hair is in a sleek middle parting and her face is framed by curls. The only addition is that instead of accessories such as hair jewels she is actually seen wearing bonnets which was favoured during the Elizabethan times as well as the Victorian era.

Kim Thomson 1989
A British based miniseries in which Kim Thomson plays both the young and the old Estella. The six part series meant that a lot more of the original novel could be filmed than in other adaptions therefore there was more time for character development on characters such as Estella. The Make up and hair team kept the character true to the times. Her face is framed by curls, while also having the addition of hair jewellery, something that was often seen on the high class in the Victorian times.

Justine Waddell 1999
This BBC adaptation was recognised for its costume design. Estella's was particularly beautiful with her Victorian gowns and bonnets. Fran Needham and Nicola Mathews were the make up artists on set. Once again Estella's make up is kept quite simple, to show the character to be of true beauty. Her hair is in a middle parting with beautiful detailing along the sides, and hair falling in curls at the back, which is how the late Victorians wore their hair. So far I feel this Estella is one of the most historically accurate.

Vanessa Kirby and Izzy Meikle-Small 2011
In 2011 there was a three part television series, which is one of my favourite adaptions. Adele Firth, Kirstin Chalmers and Darlene Forrester were the make up artists on sets while Chris Lyons, Michael Byrne and Kristyan Mallett were on Prosthetics. Both the early and late Estella were historically accurate. For Izzy she is seen with a middle parting, plaited at the side to frame the face with a high bun at the back, an early Victorian style. For the late Victorian, Estella's parting falls slightly away from the middle, something they didn't worry about as much by this time. The curls are a lot looser around the face, and the buns decorated with curls. As well as the hair being historically correct, this was the first adaptation that I noticed made the bruising clear after she gets beaten by her husband therefore it is accurate to the novel. This is the adoption that I am most likely to take inspiration from.

Holliday Grainger 2012
Directed by Mike Newell and distributed by Lionsgate, this is the final adaption I will be looking at. Zoe Brown, Hannah Edwards, Marc Pilcher and Jenny Shircore were just some of the make up artists on set. Her skin is pale with rosy cheeks and lips, something that was idealised in the Victorian Era. The Hair is slicked into a middle parting with a wave framing the face, while the remaining hair is put into a high plaited bun. This is accurate to a late Victorian hairstyle, although they would usually have some loose curls falling at the back.
