Late Victorian Hairstyles

As the Victorian era went on so did the change in hairstyles. The hair became more ornate and detailed. It was also more complicated than the earlier designs.

Much like the Elizabethan’s the Victorians would use padding to create lift at the top of the hair. This would be made out of their own hair, collected from the brush.  Fringes made their first appearance around 1880. The fringe would still hold detail, usually with fluffy curls, while there will also be curls at the back under the bun. This would be created using the curling iron, which was invented in 1866 by Sir Hiram Maxim. Although in 1874 French inventors Marcel Grateau and Maurice Lentheric claimed to have invented it first.

Parisian hairdresser M. Marcel created the Marcel wave just after the 1870’s. He created this by turning a curling iron upside down which created a natural wave.
Finally accessories became popular near the end of the era. Examples of these include the mate hair combs, mamental hairpins with detailing such as rhine pebbles and laced butterflies.
