Penny Dreadful

I chose Penny Dreadful as my TV show as I didn't want to go along the lines of Vampires or Zombies like a lot of the other shows. This saga is filled with dark mystery and suspense and lives within a half world between reality and the supernatural. With this show it not only takes away from this sort of "popular" supernatural, but also brings the old favourites from the Gothic back into play. Characters such as Victor Frankenstein and his monster, Dorian Gray, Mina Harker and Abraham Van Helsing are featured with a modern interpretation. Such as Frankenstein’s monster who isn't just seen as a mindless monster, he has deep feelings that we get to see throughout the show. The show also includes their own original characters such as Ethan Chandler a werewolf and Vanessa Ives who has something inside her that she has to fight to be in control, it shows there is something within us all. There is a Broad range of characters to take inspiration from when creating my own characters. 

It is still quite a new show, that premiered in 2014, the second season is due for release on the 3rd May 2015. In a way I felt this was better as it would be easier to introduce new characters to the show as they will ease into the storyline. This is far from a family series, and is definitely aimed at a more mature audience. However horror is popular with teenagers up to the older generation who saw the birth of the horror genre. Therefore this show will be popular with a wider audience. Woman would be drawn to this as Vanessa Ives is a strong and independent character. Although she has a demon within, everyday she fights to keep it inside while also trying to save other characters. She is a clear example of a final girl who can injure anything. I like this show as it not only looks at real monsters, but the monsters within each person making it much more relatable while still having that fear factor. I also like how all the monsters of the gothic are represented as it has something for everyone. It looks into the characters past so we can truly connect to the character and understand them a bit more. Even though already famous gothic characters are in the show we see a different side to them, sometimes in a more vulnerable light.
